Report of the day, 19:30:

I’ve finished preparing the talk for Friday. Unfortunately, it’s not as I would have liked: the 25+5-minute limit is extremely restrictive, and talking about the BSDs in such a short time means having to skip over some fundamental points. Specifically, I will need to reduce the emphasis on the initial part, the less technical and more “motivational” section. I would have needed at least 40 minutes. 25 is really too little for a talk worthy of the name.

On the plus side, in the next few days, I will have to set up a new, quite interesting setup based on the BSDs. I’m considering using both FreeBSD and OpenBSD – the power of jails, the security of OpenBSD as an endpoint – unfortunately, I can’t provide many details as I’ve been asked to keep it confidential. Still, it will be very interesting for me to implement.

I’ve also modified several reverse proxies, switching from nginx to haproxy – I’ve integrated Prometheus and Grafana as well, and the ability to impose granular limits has improved the management of traffic spikes for FediMeteo. I’m really satisfied with the results.

I'm starting to prepare the ideas for the talk I'll give at OSDay (osday.dev/agenda) next month. One of the issues I often face is explaining to people that just because I appreciate and prefer using the BSDs doesn't mean I'm AGAINST Linux. I never liked the "distro wars" even twenty-five years ago because I’ve always thought that, in the end, we’re all heading in the same direction.

The message I’ll try to convey isn’t that I don’t want to use Linux, but that the BSDs are more suited to the ways I use them, and why, in my opinion, they can also be useful to those who will attend. In other words, I’ll suggest giving them a try.

In an extremely polarized world (even in tech), it probably won’t be easy.
Just before the Covid emergency, I was offered a "challenge" talk (by a Windows sysadmin I know). People, he said, love this kind of format. I declined. For me, it's just about using the right tool for the right purpose, not a war.

fahrplan.events.ccc.deEuclid, das Weltraumteleskop - 180 Millionen Galaxien sind ein guter Anfang 38C3„Euclid" ist seit 2023 das neue Weltraumteleskop der Europäischen Weltraumbehörde mit Beteiligungen eines Wissenschaftskonsortiums aus vierzehn europäischen Ländern, den USA, Kanada und Japan. Gestartet vor knapp eineinhalb Jahren, läuft jetzt seit gut 9 Monaten die wissenschaftliche Himmeldurchmusterung. Auf dem 37C3 konnte ich die ersten fünf "Early Release Observation" Bilder vorstellen, seitdem ist viel passiert. Vor allem läuft nach ein paar Anlaufschwierigkeiten die Mission richtig gut und viele hundert Quadratgrad des Himmels sind bereits fertig kartiert - die Datenbearbeitung und Auswertung läuft. Ich werde weitere Bilder und einen kleinen Blick hinter die Kulissen zeigen.
