One thing I love to do after the Oscars is to watch all the best animated feature film nominees. The winner, Flow, has gotten lots of positive attention for it’s low budget et being made with open source software, but my personal pic for best movie would have been “Memoir of a Snail”. This movie completely fell under my radar before which is surprising because I love this kind of stop motion aesthetic. (I still didn’t watch the Wallace and Gromit movie though) #animation #oscars #movies #cinema

Here's a review, a literary piece on #Anora written by a sex worker. It confirms my suspicions, but it also is a great text. So make sure you read it.
"Romance Labor: on Sean Baker’s Anora"

"Whatever satisfaction I could have derived from the representation of sex workers in film is suffocated by the condescension of liberal representation politics wherein marginalized people are depicted as most authentic in states of suffering."

Musical Interlude: I didn't watch the Oscars last night, but here's a musical performance from a past ceremony that I remember finding very sweet and moving, even if it was also comical...From the movie "A Mighty Wind"...with the actors performing IN CHARACTER, which I loved.

"A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow," performed live by Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara.

Upon waking up this morning, and learning who won Oscars, I have little interest in watching the the latter half of the show that I missed.

This is the reason why I'm not a big fan of the Oscars... obscure films winning big.

I'm probably uncultured and ignorant but I'm not really interested in watching any of the Oscars® movies except for the animated movies Flow and Wild Robot, Wallace & Gromit and Memoir of a Snail.

No way I'm watching a 3 hours 34 minutes movie in a theater. I just don't have the patience and resilience to sit half a day very close to strangers eating popcorn and nachos.

"As I have said many times before, the biggest victims of so-called ‘cancel culture’ in the US remain the Palestinian people and their supporters. The shameful treatment of ‘No Other Land’ by the big distributors in our movie industry is just the latest and best example of that"

I still remember when I was a child and my parents came home happy to tell me and my brother that they had voted for a president for the first time in their lives, in 1989. My dad was about my age now.

When I visited my parents last year, I was lucky enough to take them to the cinema to see "I'm Still Here". That made the film even more moving for me.

"I'm Still Here" is the first Brazilian production to win an Oscar. A movie about the evils of a dictatorship.

It's an American award on the soil of a country that supported a military coup that lasted more than 20 years and, coincidentally, is now on the verge of a coup d'état.

The film explores the profound impact of Brazil's last military dictatorship on one family. Fernanda Torres delivers a powerful performance that offers a glimpse into the daily struggles faced by many during that time. It's a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength of those who endured such difficult times. It also marks the first time a Brazilian actress has won a Golden Globe.

Go see it.

Basel Adra, accepting the award, said the film “reflects the harsh reality that we have been enduring for decades”.

He added, “ About two months ago, I became a father, and my hope to my daughter that she will not have to live the same life I’m living now — always fearing settler violence, home demolitions and forcible displacements that my community Masafer Yatta is living and facing every day under Israeli occupation.”
