@tante

I really have to stop harping on this but look at this shit. As long as Democrats do what their Wall Street donors want (and they always do) nothing will change.

They have no plans to be an opposition party because their funders are all A-OK with all the deregulation, money laundering, crypto scams, and massive tax cuts for the rich at the expense of everyone else.

The new wave of #memecoin scams like #TrumpCoin are also all facilitated/perpetrated by these decentralized trading platforms. Today in Labor History March 7, 1932: Over 3,000 people, led by the United Auto Workers, marched on the main Ford plant in Dearborn, Michigan. Workers on the Ford Hunger March were demanding that laid off colleagues be rehired. They also demanded a slow-down of the assembly lines and an end to the evictions of unemployed workers from their homes. Marchers carried banners saying "Give Us Work," "We Want Bread Not Crumbs," and "Tax the Rich and Feed the Poor." During the protests, police opened fire with machine guns, killing 4 and injuring 60. A fifth worker died later from his wounds. The Unemployed Council (part of the Communist Party) also supported the march.

Are there any coherent arguments against taxing very high incomes and wealth, to reduce social inequality ?

I don't think so. Three of the main arguments are:
1. Income and wealth belong to individuals - tax is theft;
2. Individuals make better investment decisions than governments or other social bodies; and
3. Unless people keep all or most of the income and wealth they have gained there will be no incentive to work, so everybody gets poorer.

The first argument breaks down because all income and wealth is social in origin - most profit arises from business 'externalities' - unpaid labour in the home, state education, free use of resources, use of public roads and other infrastructure... None of the world's major industries would be profitable if they paid for their use of these free resources.

The second argument breaks down because private investment only goes after financial returns or hobby-horses (like space rockets) not wider priorities with no quick investment returns (like education, home insulation, rewilding) - and a lot goes on socially useless investment in assets like housing just to extract rents - a disutility for almost everyone.

The third argument is disproved by history. In the 'Trente Glorieuses' - the 30 years or so after the war - marginal tax rates on both income and property were 70-90%, even in the US - but these were exceptionally hard-working years, with high economic growth, improving living standards, better education, more caring societies, etc, etc... When taxes were reduced from the 1980s on, social progress began to reverse.

As a fellow autistic person, I would give it a try… but I couldn't find Elon Musk on Mastodon… incidently that happens every time I look for a bad guy :p
If his jet flies near me, I will give it a shot and talk to him. Actually everybody can watch out on: mastodon.social/@elonjet Together I am sure we will (eventually) talk sense into him.
Keep fighting with democratic arguments!

Mission Statement [reviwed and edited 24-12-21]
[but don't hold me to it]

After the devastating Dutch elections [‘23-11-22] I decided to dedicate my toots back to the original goal.
I care about a lot of issues, most global some national; but I won't be 'tooting' about them all.

First and formost I WANT to 'toot' about:
* #ClimateSolutions
Because I trust that most people reading know about the dreadfull future of climate change, I want to spread the, possible, solutions to a problem rather than reiterate on the problem.
* #ClimateJustice
One of those solution might be sueing the polluters or governments on human rights, violations or #Ecoside
* #ClimateAction
Action is by all means a solution.
* #ClimateEmergency
* #Climate

As said I want to focus on the global issue. I don't want to nitpick on too much principles. Like: "What's worse: eating cows or driving diesel?" Both are devastating behaviors of intitled rich people!
On the otherhand therefore I truly respect ANY effort to make a change for the better.

Most of all... I want to add instead of preach. Bring some bits of the puzzle to the table.

I'm NOT a scientist of any kind. I'm just a disabled old white guy typing on a desk reading and searching a lot.

I tend to toot 10-15 toots at 13:00* that I boost again unchanged at 20:00* the same day, but that's NOT a promise. [*=my [Amstedam] time]

But after a year or two there appear to be 4 general topics: #Climate #Gaza / #IsraeliGenocide #USpolitics and #Ukraine

I tend to follow anyone who 'retoots' or 'favourites' my toots. Forget it, I'm vain.
If any of my 'followers' wants to opt out... this is your chance, as always.

Why is #democracy failing? Lies & disinfo. from the right that led to Trump's 2nd term, & the disproportionate number of wealthy Americans who sustain the economy. The rich are getting richer, & the poor, poorer.

"This is not a healthy economy for all.

The top 10% of American earners — HHs making ~$250,000 a year or more🚨-account for 49.7% of all spending.

3 decades ago, the top 10% accounted for about 36% of spending."
