MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History December 9, 1842: The Anarchist formerly known as Prince, Peter Kropotkin, was born on this date in Moscow. Kropotkin was a geographer and anarcho-communist. His most well-known works include “Conquest of Bread,” “Fields, Factories,” and “Mutual Aid, A Factor of Evolution,” which explores the role of mutually-beneficial cooperation and reciprocity (i.e., mutual aid) in the animal kingdom and human societies both past and present. It was an argument against the theory of social Darwinism, popular at the time, that argued that existing social relations were the natural consequence of rich people’s inherent genetic superiority over the poor. Kropotkin argued that because mutual aid has pragmatic advantages for the survival of human and animal communities, it has proliferated through natural selection. In 1874, Kropotkin was arrested and imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress for subversive political activity. In 1876, he escaped and fled to Switzerland. During his younger days, he served as a geographer for the Russian empire. In 1873, he published a scientific paper showing that the existing maps entirely misrepresented the physical features of Asia.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/kropotkin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kropotkin</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/russia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>russia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prison</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/geography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>geography</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MutualAid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MutualAid</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>

Sacha Ravenda<p>It's already Portfolio Day once again.</p><p>Hello everyone. My name is Sacha. I am a comic artist from Québec. I am currently illustrating a historical YA comic series called Seeds of Spring about the life of the famous russian revolutionary and philosopher Peter Kropotkin, seen through the eyes of a current day indiginous teenager from Nova Scotia. Our fifth book was nomnicated for best Canadian independant comic in the Sequential Magazine awards for 2023 and book 6 will be available in stores any day now. </p><p>I am also collaborating with a startup game studio from Laval on a really fun indy game, however I can't really show anything for that yet (even though I cheated a few times)</p><p>And finally, I am actively taking commissions for DnD and TTRPG characters, since fantasy art is what I love doing best.</p><p>Looking forward to seeing all the cool portfolios. Sacha Ravenda<p>Seeds of Spring is comic book version of the biography of Peter Kropotkin. A Russian anarchist who abandoned his noble birth to become a scientist and revolutionary, told from the perspective of Naguset, indigenous teen, reading his biography during a particularly rough year in her life. In many ways, Kropotkin’s life parallels her own experiences.</p><p>Physical copies can be purchased here:<br><a href="https://microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/zines/10448" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">microcosmpublishing.com/catalo</span><span class="invisible">g/zines/10448</span></a></p><p>UPDATE: I am now selling the PDF's via Ko-Fi<br><a href="https://ko-fi.com/sacharavenda66232" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">ko-fi.com/sacharavenda66232</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.yesterweb.org/tags/kropotkin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kropotkin</span></a> <a href="https://social.yesterweb.org/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://social.yesterweb.org/tags/comics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>comics</span></a> <a href="https://social.yesterweb.org/tags/mastoart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mastoart</span></a> <a href="https://social.yesterweb.org/tags/comicbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>comicbooks</span></a> <a href="https://social.yesterweb.org/tags/art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>art</span></a> <a href="https://social.yesterweb.org/tags/kofi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kofi</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>To this day, Mexico honors Ricardo Flores Magon, and his brothers, who led the anarchist revolution in, and occupation of, Tijuana and other northern Baja California towns in 1911, during the early days of the Mexican Revolution.</p><p>Berlin has a Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in the Mitte neighborhood. I spoke at a radio station there, about Food Not Bombs, back in the early 1990s. Germany has at least one street named after Emma Goldman.</p><p>There is a Kropotkinskaya metro station in Moscow &amp; Mount Kropotkin in Antarctica. There are still numerous schools around the world named for Spanish anarchist educator Francisco Ferrer. And numerous places have streets or squares named after Karl Marx.</p><p>But where are the revolutionary street and place names in the U.S.? Emma Goldman and Ricardo Flores Magon both spent considerable portions of their lives in the U.S., including time in U.S. prisons (Magon died in Leavenworth). Joe Hill's music lives on, was performed by Pete Seeger, Utah Philips, and Paul Robeson, was executed by the state on trumped up charges. Where are the Joe Hill streets? How about Albert Parsons, falsely convicted and executed for the Haymarket bombing, or his wife Lucy, radical organizer and cofounder of the IWW? How about street names or parks named for Cherokee radical and IWW organizer Frank Little, lynched by vigilantes? Or African-American IWW organizer Ben Fletcher?</p><p>The closest thing that comes readily to my mind is a short stretch of 9th St., in Oakland, renamed Huey P Newton Street, in 2021. Or Malcolm X school in Berkeley.</p><p>If you know of other examples of street or place names in the U.S. named for radicals or revolutionaries, please share photos.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>communism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/IWW" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IWW</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/joehill" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>joehill</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/emmagoldman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emmagoldman</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/marx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>marx</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/haymarket" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>haymarket</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/kropotkin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kropotkin</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/rosaluxemburg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rosaluxemburg</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RicardoFloresMagon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RicardoFloresMagon</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/tijuana" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tijuana</span></a></p>
