42GB🪫
Wondering… what do people recommend to small business owner (non technical) with a small budget who needs a website. I feel like there is not enough time to make something professional from scratch with own design. I almost tend to recommend a platform like squarespace, wix, webflow. Not optimal, but fits to the budget. Any other idea? We are looking for something low maintenance, with a wide variety of templates.

#website #cms #wordpress #help #boostPlease

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
I used the "gallery" option in Wordpress (Classic Editor) a lot.

But what it looks like in the pseudo-HTML source that Wordpress uses is this:

[gallery columns="4" link="file" ids="7910,7911,7912,7913,7920,7921,7922,7924"]

Which conversion/archiving tools don't know what to do with.

I assume Wordpress must generate the gallery HTML everytime the page is loaded? (I'm pretty sure the numbers are document numbers for the images, which also contain size and captions).

I've been manually converting them to HTML tables, which will work in exported Markdown (albeit just as quoted HTML -- because apparently Markdown doesn't support image tables or galleries).

Also, I have to open each image and then copy and paste the filename into the "Add Media" search bar in order to add the images to my article so I can put table tags around them.

Is there a better way to do this?

Maybe a way to explode the galleries into individual images, at least?

Also, do any of the static CMS/blog generators handle images and galleries better than this?

All the ones I know seem to view images as an afterthought, and galleries, let alone artistic layouts not even a tiny bit. Moritz
Yes, #Wordpress is great because you can just throw it on any 1$ webspace (though you still need a DB, which is already hard for many users to create/use/understand). But if you really think a 25MB(!) CMS which (by default) doesn't let you define any custom content type or fields and whose admin panel looks like this is still "the best way to blog in 2024" then I gotta tell you: You've been sleeping on the whole #CMS market.

MissConstrue
Y’all, I have spent all morning trying to figure out why a bunch of sites were broken, and fell down a rabbit hole hole of tech bro billionaire losing his damn mind.

So, WordPress is now a hot freaking mess, as #MattMullenweg instituted a supply chain attack that broke thousands of sites, because the founder of Wordpress has decided he now owns all the open source code that 20 years of free developers have donated. And if you don’t like it, he will lock you out, steal your code, and threaten your user base.

It’s absolutely bugfuck insane. Wanna fall down the hole? I didn't find many problematic areas except for buttons appearing to be split into two elements but do the same action, like, for example, there will be an unlabeled button right next to the edit button but that unlabeled edit button still leads to the edit button.

Radio buttons are read nicely! Almost all form fields are labeled nicely for posting content, except for the forms where I had to actually write post bodies.

To post, you first choose a block. I genuinely don't understand how this is more intuitive than taking 5 minutes to learn some #Markdown but anyway, after you pick a block, another dialog opens where you actually do the writing. This is the most problematic. The more than a few unlabeled buttons above the text areas appear to be formatting buttons but I was unable to tell, when picking the, markdown block, for example.

When I picked a heading block, I was to pick what heading level I wanted, and this was very accessible, but when it came time to save my block, somehow, I kept missing the save button or whatever that would actually add the block when I'm all done.

Other than that, with a few accessibility tweaks and attention, this could be a great CMS for static sites and otherwise. This is just a personal thing, but I just could not get the hang of blocks. I like writing text and going back up to review it and so on. Still, this CMS is far more accessible than I had assumed.

#CMS #Accessibility #Kirby
