I miss making music. I miss it a lot. But the problem with playing clarinet is that it's not easy to play casually, on your own… you can play melodies and some solos, sure, but the instrument shines when it's played in accompaniment with other instruments.
That, and it's pretty loud. It's tricky to practice clarinet and not have that constant worry in the back of your head that you're bothering people. It's just hard to pick up and use, you know?
@Rheall yes! EWIs are on my list too, and this is a wonderful idea! Save up for it, chip away at it, keep an eye on Reverb.com
@Rheall I have the same issue with learning bagpipes: I love playing, but the available time between "work" and "waking up the neighbors" is limited...
I've tried the electric instruments and one thing I'll say is that the metal sensors that rely on conductivity can be wonky. If your fingers are too dry or the sensors are too dirty, or the capacitor sensitivity isn't adjust just right it doesn't work.
@Rheall Lockdown has helped me with my anxiety regarding annoying the neighbours. With everyone staying at home, we have to allow each a bit of space to be noisy, and that starts with allowing myself :-) Admittedly in my case it's only singing, which isn't as loud as a clarinet! I try to keep it to 30mn a day.
Having said that, those Electronic Wind Instruments do look quite exciting, regardless of the neighbours :-)
@Rheall I've seen a lot of people use ensemble music or backing tracks from youtube to play along with! Like if it lacks your instrument or you could add something! Not sure how much goes with clarinet music, though.
Do violin or electric bass often go with clarinet? I've never really played with a clarinetist but I've been meaning to practice more. :D Maybe we could trade recordings to add to?
But I love playing clarinet SO MUCH. I don't think I could commit to playing with a concert band any time soon (that and I'd need a LOT of practice to get back to a playable level), and it seems like a waste to get lessons on an instrument I won't be playing with other people.
I dunno. I've been stuck on playing my clarinet for decades now.
The EWI, though… this would be SUCH a fun way to interact with and experiment with music, in a way that makes sense to me.
